For this essay, my main goal(s) are to be able to have a good, strong thesis and give enough background to introduce my quotes. I tend to struggle with my thesis and claims and connecting them so I hope to become stronger at doing that. In order to achieve these goals I am going to ask other people other than my peers in class to review my essay. For instance, my writing lab teacher and Professor Emerson because I feel like the more people read over my essay the more mistakes I can catch them and fix it. My biggest challenge not only in this essay , but in any big piece of writing I do is always gonna be creating a thesis. I always struggle with making a clear, concise, working thesis so I hope to change that in this last paper. If there’s a problem that’s too difficult to solve on my own I will reach other to my other sources who are also deal with essay.

In my new paper I am writing I am going to include visual, linguistics and spatial aids in my final paper. My main focus for our last paper is to include photos because in my personal opinion images and photographs just help people get an overall better understanding of the topic they are reading or learning about. I definitely would like to go back and read my sources and pull out more quotes that I find will be more effective than the ones I’m using now. Also with the quotes I want to add more context to them so when I go back and look at them I know exactly where this came from and why I chose to use it. Getting my point across in this essay is the most important thing to do so I think visual and linguistic aids are my best option to do that. I have never used photos before in an essay so I’m excited to see the final layout of my paper.
Thesis: Beauty is define among people in Americas mainstream society depending on peoples values and opinions.
Claim #1: In my opinion beauty is among all of us and everybody interprets it differently.
Claim #2: Its hard to assume peoples emotions toward beauty, but I interpret society’s views toward beauty have weakened due to the advances of technology.
Quote: “Schiller thinks of human nature as an arena in which two powerful psychological drives are at work.” (Armstrong)
Claim #3: Beauty is not always pleasing to the eye, but it can be pleasing to someone’s soul.
Claim #4: Beauty can be seen but also interacted with.
Quote: quotes to come from podcasts. (Liam and Tehya)
Claim #5: Many people feel that money can buy beauty.
Quote:”Schillers worried that beauty was too connected to social status” (Armstrong)
Claim #6: Beauty can be specific to a setting; a field.
Quote: “To begin with it’s clear to me that the definition of beauty depends on the field.” (Truth and beauty in science)
The article I chose to look at for this blog is called “Truth and Beauty of Science” by Ashutosh Jogalekar and in this piece of text he talks about the perspectives of beauty in different variations of science. Jogalekar talks about how beauty depends on what field of science you’re looking at. He also talks about one of his favorite science writers, Philip Ball. In this text, Jogalekar informs us what Ball’s ideas are towards science and beauty and he incorporates Ball’s ideas with his own. I will use this article to show how beauty can be intertwined in every aspect of science, whether its physics or chemistry or whatever topic of science there is.
I will be choosing two of my classmates podcasts to use in my essay. I have decided to use Liam Darcy’s and Tehya Casey’s because out of all the podcasts we have listened too, they are the ones I can comprehend the most. Both podcasts sparked ideas in me for our next upcoming paper, and I really enjoyed the people they interviewed answers to the questions because they seemed emotionally attached to what they were talking about, and gave me a different perspective on beauty in other peoples lives. Both podcasts talk about completely different aspects of beauty, one talks about the New England coast and how scenic and beautiful it is. Then, the other one talks about someone recovering from bad choices. These podcasts that I chose will hopefully give me a better understanding of beauty as a whole.
When it comes to Armstrong’s quote “To regard beauty as a luxury adornment or a social signifier was to miss the true potential of the experience.” I agree. I think he’s trying to say that people tend to be blindsided by other things in this world and don’t focus on the true beauty. Everybody has their own ideas of beauty or how they would define beauty, but there really is no length to which beauty can not go. The basic quote “Never judge a book by its cover” is a perfect example of how it has become common to judge people by how they look on the outside versus the beauty they can possible hold on the inside as well. People experience beauty every second, of every day and as Armstrong states ” … , we have all had the mysterious experience of finding something beautiful.” and in this statement he is very true. Everybody in this world has different interests and things that fascinate them and that’s what make beauty so rare yet accessible. My community believes that beauty is typically materialistic objects, however some look past that, and notice what can truly affect them and inspire them. However, when it comes to my family we genuinely do not care about items that were bought, we tend to care more about homemade things that people had to actually think about and put thought into it. My family and I have always enjoyed nature and the outdoors where beauty is inescapable. Even the smallest of things can be beautiful, people just have to look.
The chapter I chose to look at for blog #13 is chapter 3 and its called “As He Himself Puts It” The Art of Quoting. In this chapter it helps you introduce and exit quotes. By that I mean it shows us how to add depth to choosing a quote. This chapter helps us simplify the way quotes are used in papers or any other text. In the current paper that we are writing I struggle with introducing my quotes which is why this is the perfect chapter for me to look at.
Before: Famous writer and journalist, John Lehrer expresses his feelings about science and art in “Is Future of Science… Is Art?”. In this piece of text he believes we could be using arts to further the sciences. He writes “Bringing our two cultures will allow us to judge our knowledge not by its origins, but in terms of its usefulness.” Here Lehrer shows that bring science and art together will only bring positive outcomes, that it will give us knowledge that we didn’t think we could obtain. Why fight something that can improve the way we as humans live today? Why not have greater knowledge and succeed in conquering new worlds we didn’t even know existed?
After:Famous writer and journalist, John Lehrer expresses his feelings about science and art in “Is Future of Science… Is Art?”. In this piece of text he believes we could be using arts to further the sciences. According to Lehrer, “Bringing our two cultures will allow us to judge our knowledge not by its origins, but in terms of its usefulness.”In making this comment, Lehrer urges us to bring science and art together will only bring positive outcomes, that it will give us knowledge that we didn’t think we could obtain. Why fight something that can improve the way we as humans live today? Why not have greater knowledge and succeed in conquering new worlds we didn’t even know existed?
Yo Yo Ma and Mark Boslough both have the same opinions when it comes to art in todays society. They both agree that it is severely important in todays society. Boslough expresses that “Science is also under attack from the religious right, whose literal interpretation of the Bible supersedes scientific evidence, logical reasoning, and common sense.” He then continued to talk about “…but it now has an active campaign to remove scientifically validated subjects _ such as evolution _ from the classroom and have them replaced by their own unscientific opinions, such as creationism.” When it comes to Yo Yo Ma he takes the approach that arts should be included into the education system. When he says this “the values behind arts integration-collaboration, flexible-thinking, and disciplined imagination- lead to the capacity to innovate.” it really makes me think about the bigger picture , and I absolutely agree with opinion on how STEM can be transformed into STEAM.
The use of the program STEAM- science, technology, engineering, arts, and math is not useful or necessary when it comes to educating the younger generations. Without arts, we have accomplished so much already, why bother including something so redundant? The education of the younger generation is thriving and does not need the arts. However, when it comes to Yo Yo Ma, he would not agree with my statements towards the arts. He would argue that the arts are necessary and useful for empathetical and critical thinking and so much more. The arts do not provide stable, well paid jobs instead they provide loss and heartbreak to people who think they have a chance in finding a good job. Stem is working just fine in todays curriculum, there is no need to change something so perfect already.
The surrounding context for an essay is kind of considered as the background of an essay. The man that wrote this essay is named Yo-Yo Ma, and it was published in 2014. He began this essay by talking about all he has achieved in his life like music awards and even Grammy’s and just overall the points in his life where he was truly happy and having the most success. He is very broad in explaining himself as well, he does not like to make insignificant points.
When it comes to reading this essay, we did not really get a choice in reading it since it is an assignment. However, this will really guide us and give us a good start in writing our second essay.
Yo Yo Ma was someone who I have definitely heard about before, his name sounds very familiar to me. I had to read and annotate about Yo Yo Ma because it was assigned to us in English class. He believes that when it comes to the education system that we should include not just STEM or science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, but the arts which are more important for children’s education. He believes it will give them empathy and emotions.
- Bolster: “support or strengthen” Yo Yo Ma use this word to say the integrative feedback loops needs to be supported.
- Lascivious: “feeling or revealing an overt and often offensive sexual desire.” Ma uses this word to show how the people of Spain reacted to the dance called “Sarabande”.
- Invigorate: “give strength or energy to” Ma says this about spreading traditions.
